Toll Tax Increase: People traveling through National Highways (NHs) and Expressways may have to shell out more money from next month as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is likely to increase toll rates from April 1. According to a report published by a private newspaper, the toll rates will increase by 5% to 10%.

Toll Tax Policy on National Highways

As per the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, the fee rates are to be revised every year with effect from April 1. Policy decisions on specific toll issues are being taken from time to time based on the requirements.

Expenditure will increase from 5 percent to 10 percent

The road transport ministry will look into the proposals by the last week of this month and may approve the rates after due consideration. The report further states that the toll rate for cars and light vehicles will increase by up to five per cent and for other heavy vehicles it is likely to go up to 10 per cent.

It is being told that toll rates will also be increased on the recently commissioned Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. At present, Rs 2.19 is being charged for every kilometer on the section of the newly opened Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which will be increased by about 10 per cent.

Toll will also be increased on Delhi-Meerut Expressway

The number of vehicles on the expressway is increasing rapidly. At present, around 20 thousand vehicles are plying on the expressway every day, the number of which is likely to increase to 50 to 60 thousand in the next six months. On the other hand, toll rates of Eastern Peripheral Expressway and Delhi-Meerut Expressway are also likely to be hiked.

The facility of a monthly pass, which is given to people living within 20 km of the toll plaza, which is usually cheaper, is also expected to increase by 10%.
