Train accidents are not a new thing in India. Today, on 19 May, three passengers were injured when an iron pole fell on the Shalimar Express passing through Urkura railway station near Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. A railway official said that this incident happened at around 9.30 am, when the Shalimar Express going to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai) was passing through Urkura railway station. The injured have been admitted to the hospital. Insurance is also given by the railway in case of death or injury in such rail accidents. The benefit of Railway Travel Insurance is available only to those passengers who have taken insurance while buying the ticket. The premium of this insurance is only 45 paise.
Railway Travel Insurance is available to those passengers who book railway tickets online. Railway Travel Insurance is not available when tickets are booked from the ticket counter. Also, passengers travelling in general coaches do not get this facility. This insurance is optional. That means it is up to the passenger whether to take it or not.
Insurance cover is Rs 10 lakh
If you have Railway Travel Insurance, the insurance company compensates the loss suffered by the passenger in a train accident. If a passenger dies in a train accident, the insurance amount is Rs 10 lakh. If the passenger becomes completely disabled in the accident, the company gives him Rs 10 lakh. If there is permanent disability, the insurance amount is Rs 7.5 lakh. Whereas, if one gets injured, Rs 2 lakh is given for medical expenses.
How to get railway travel insurance
When online railway ticket booking is done, the option of railway travel insurance comes on the website and app. While booking the ticket, choose the insurance option. You will be charged only 35 paise for insurance.
On choosing the insurance option, a link will come on your email ID and mobile number. This link is of the insurance company. By going to this link, fill the nominee details there. It is easy to get insurance claim if there is a nominee in the insurance policy.
