PMJDY Insurance Claims: The dark truth of Jan Dhan Yojana, only so many insurance claims are being settled

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana: Account holders of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana get bank account as well as Rupay debit card, which is very important in terms of insurance…

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana was started with big claims. It can also be called the first major scheme of the Modi government, whose objective was to provide banking services to the population of the country who were deprived of it. However, now the ground reality of Jan Dhan Yojana has been revealed in an RTI.

Information received in RTI

Under the Right to Information, the government was asked about the insurance (PMJDY Insurance) given to the account holders of Jan Dhan Yojana. According to a news of The Hindu, in response to the questions of RTI activist Chandrashekhar Gaur, the government said that during the last two financial years, only about half of the claims received regarding insurance under this scheme could be settled.

Accounts for the last two years

According to the figures given by the government, during the last two financial years, 647 claims of insurance came under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. Out of these only 329 claims could be settled. During the financial year 2021-22, 341 claims were made. Of these, 182 were settled, while 48 claims were rejected. On the other hand, even the government does not know the status of 111 claims. During this, Rs 2.27 crore was paid in lieu of claims.

Similarly, in the financial year 2022-23, out of 306 claims, 147 were settled. 10 claims were rejected, while the status of 149 is not known. For the cases settled during the last financial year, Rs 1.88 crore was paid.

Get this much insurance claim

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had hinted at Jan Dhan Yojana in his first Independence Day address in August 2014. After that this scheme was launched on 28 August 2014. Under the scheme, account holders also get accident insurance cover. Earlier this cover was Rs 1 lakh, which has now been increased to Rs 2 lakh.

This one condition is overwhelming

The account holders of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana get a bank account as well as a RuPay debit card, which is very important in terms of insurance. There is a condition that if the account holder has done any transaction using his RuPay card within 90 days preceding the day of the accident, then only his claim will be valid. This condition is the reason for rejection of the claim in most of the cases.

No money in so many crore accounts

According to the data available till March 2023, the number of bank accounts with Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in the country is 48.65 crore. A total of Rs 1,98,844.34 crore is currently deposited in these bank accounts. There is no balance in about 4.03 crore Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana bank accounts.
