There is no doubt that it is mandatory to link PAN (Permanent Account Number) with Aadhaar. However, there are some relaxations in this rule as notified by the government. The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar has been extended several times. However, the current deadline is March 31, 2023 and this time if you do not link your PAN with Aadhaar, your PAN will become invalid from April 01, 2023.
In a recent tweet, the Income Tax Department had said, ‘As per the Income Tax Act, 1961, it is mandatory for those who are not exempted to link their PAN with Aadhaar before 31.03.2023 to link PAN with Aadhaar Is. Otherwise, from 1.04.2023, the unlinked PAN will become inoperative.’
Who does not need PAN-Aadhaar link?
According to a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Finance in May 2017, a number of people have been placed in the exempted category. People falling in this category will not face any problem even if they do not link PAN with Aadhaar, nor will they have to pay Rs 10,000 as fine.
1. Linking is not necessary for people living in Assam, Meghalaya and Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
2. It is not mandatory for a non-resident to link PAN with Aadhaar as per the Income Tax Act, 1961.
3. Also not necessary for persons who have crossed the age of eighty years or more at any time during the previous year.
4. It is not necessary even if he is not a citizen of India.
Is PAN Card and Aadhaar Link Compulsory for Everyone?
The Income Tax Department has made it mandatory to link PAN card with Aadhaar. According to the advisory of the government, if both the identity cards are not linked before March 31, 2023, then the PAN card will become inactive. How to Link PAN Card with Aadhaar Card
If your PAN and Aadhaar are not linked, you can link them through SMS or online. To link PAN with Aadhaar through SMS, send SMS to either 567678 or 56161 using your registered phone number.
You can link PAN with Aadhaar online by visiting the Income Tax portal and paying the applicable late fee or Rs 1000.

Register your ID if not already done.
Login to the portal using your User ID, Password and Date of Birth. The user ID to login will be your PAN (Permanent Account Number).
You will see a pop-up window to link your PAN with Aadhaar.
To link, go to ‘Profile Settings’ on the menu bar and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ on the homepage.
Enter your PAN number, Aadhaar number and your name as mentioned on your Aadhaar card.
Tick ​​the box ‘I have only year of birth in Aadhaar card’, if applicable.
Enter the captcha code displayed on the screen to verify.
Click on the Link Aadhaar button.
