IRDAI has issued guidelines for insurance companies to settle the insurance claims of the deceased and injured persons in the Odisha train accident at the earliest. IRDAI said that immediate steps should be taken to settle the claims.
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has asked insurance companies to settle the claims of the next of kin of the deceased or injured persons in the train accident in Odisha’s Balasore at the earliest.
Let us tell you that about 288 people were killed and about 1100 people were injured when 21 coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express derailed at around 7 pm on Friday in Balasore, Odisha .
Insurance companies to settle eligible claims immediately – IRDAI
In a circular sent to insurance companies , the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India said that the recent train accident has resulted in huge loss of human life and injuries to thousands of passengers and train crew members.
In view of this, there is an urgent need for the insurance industry to take immediate steps to mitigate the hardships of the affected insured population by ensuring prompt registration and settlement of eligible claims. IRDAI has asked the insurance company to register immediately and take immediate steps for settlement of claims.

IRDAI in its circular said that if the name of the insured person is in the list of deceased or injured persons, and is traveling in the accident prone trains and is identified by the appropriate/government authorities, the claims will be processed proactively. Go
Order to issue helpline
IRDAI said that life and general insurance companies and stand-alone health insurers have been asked to issue a dedicated helpline under the supervision of a senior officer who will act as a nodal officer for those affected.
IRDAI asked to create awareness about the easy process of filing claims so that the public can easily file claims at their nearest branches or online.
