But still Indian Railways also offers insurance at a premium of 0.35 paise which customers can opt for while booking tickets through the IRCTC official website or mobile application. The benefit of this will be that compensation can be taken for any incident that occurs during train travel.
Who can opt for IRCTC travel insurance?
Indian passengers who book their tickets through IRCTC’s official website or mobile application can opt to avail travel insurance while making the reservation. However, foreigners and children below 5 years of age are not eligible. Even though this scheme is optional, if the option is exercised it will be mandatory for all passengers booked under a PNR number.
10 lakh insurance
Through this facility, IRCTC provides insurance cover up to Rs 10 lakh to its passengers, that too at a cost of less than Re 1. To avail this option, passengers will have to click on the option and fill some details while booking the ticket. This simple step can get them covered by insurance against any damage that may occur while traveling in Indian Railways trains.
Many flight ticket booking websites also offer this type of insurance, but their premiums are much higher in comparison.
Benefits of Train Travel Insurance
By opting for this insurance, passengers are compensated for any loss of valuables and other belongings during their train journey. Apart from this, in case of accident, treatment expenses and in case of death, compensation is given to the nominee of the insured.
Under the Railway Travel Insurance facility, if a passenger dies in a train accident or becomes permanently disabled, an insurance amount of up to Rs 10 lakh is paid to him.
If the passenger becomes partially disabled, he is given Rs 7.5 lakh as compensation. In case of serious injury, passengers are given an assistance amount of Rs 2 lakh and in case of minor injury, an assistance amount of up to Rs 10 thousand is given.
How to claim train travel insurance?
Passengers can claim insurance within 4 months of the occurrence of a railway accident. For this facility provided by IRCTC, passengers can go to the office of the insurance company and file a claim for insurance. While purchasing insurance, passengers must fill the name of the nominee, so that there is no problem in making a claim in case of any untoward incident.
