The government is soon going to give a big benefit to the temporary employees working with online companies. The Centre intends to provide social security to such employees as well. Under this, they should be given the benefit of pension and health insurance.
The government will end the tension of those working as delivery boys in companies like Amazon-Flipkart. The Union Ministry of Labor and Employment is considering giving social security to gig workers, i.e. those who get salary on the basis of work. The government intends to make their families safe by providing social security to such people.
A senior official of the Central Government said that the Ministry of Labor and Employment is working on a plan to provide various benefits like social security to employees in the country who get salary on the basis of gig work and work for online platforms. At the Global Economic Policy Forum of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Union Labor Secretary Sumita Dawra said that the Labor Code on Social Security has prepared a framework of social security benefits for them.
Will get benefits like regular employees
He said, ‘We are planning for workers working for temporary and online platforms. There is no traditional employer-employee relationship defined for such employees, but we need to bring social security cover for them, so that they can be more productive and support the country’s economy and e-commerce and service sector more effectively.’
Union Minister had also given indications
Union Labor Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had also said in October that a policy is being worked on to provide social security benefits like pension and health services to workers working for temporary and online platforms. This means that these temporary and daily wage workers will also get facilities like pension after retirement and will be given health insurance facility to get treatment for themselves and their families.
65 lakh people will benefit
The Union Labor Secretary said that the NITI Aayog estimates that the number of such temporary workers in the country who will get the benefit of social security right now is 65 lakh. But, in future this segment is growing rapidly and the number of such employees will also increase to two crores. Therefore, the government needs to make such a policy which can protect the interests of these employees on a wide scale.
