EDLI Insurance Claim: How to claim insurance under Employee Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme, this step-by-step process

If an employee dies due to an accident during active service time, a lump sum sum assured will be paid to the nominee nominated on his behalf.

Employee Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI) is specially designed by EPFO ​​for the salaried employees of the private sector. This system works in conjunction with EPF and Employees Pension Scheme (EPS). In case of an accident during the active service time of the individual, a lump sum sum assured is paid to the nominee. Under the EDLI scheme, the nominee of the employee is given Rs 7 lakh as sum assured. EDLI enrollment happens automatically for all organizations covered by the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952. There are no exclusions under this program, and the insurance is based on the wages received during the coverage period. Last year of employment (12 months) prior to death. Required documents may be required for filing claim under EPF, EPS and EDLI.

  • Death Certificate of EPF Employee
  • Date of Worth Certificate of Claimants
  • Proof of bank account of the claimant(s) (canceled cheque/passbook).
  • Beneficiary’s Aadhaar Number
  • Photograph of the claimant/s

If applying for an insurance claim online, the nominee must have their phone number linked with their Aadhaar. Ensure that the name, Aadhaar number, and date of birth of the beneficiary (nominee) should match with those in the records of EPFO, as provided while submitting the nomination on behalf of the member (i.e., deceased person).

How to claim online

Make sure to keep scanned copies of all the necessary documents handy for claiming online. This will make the process of filling the online claim form easier. The scanned documents should be in PDF format with a maximum file size of 2 MB.

  • First of all, you have to go to the online portal of EPF https://unifiedportal-
  • mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/ .
  • A link to file a death claim on behalf of the nominee will be available on the portal.
  • The nominee has to enter the following details. Universal Account Number (UAN), Aadhaar,
  • Beneficiary Name, Beneficiary Date of Birth and Captcha Code.
  • After entering the details click on Authorize PIN.

An OTP will be sent to the mobile number of the nominee which is linked to Aadhaar.

Once the nominee submits the PIN, the nominee can file the death claim with the EPFO.
