But sometimes they are also hit by the weather. For example, the ready crop gets spoiled due to the weather and along with the farmers, the country also suffers.
The central government runs the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PM Fasal Bima Yojana) to compensate the farmers for this loss. In this scheme, Rabi and Kharif crops of the farmers are insured.
Government pays the premium
The key point is that as part of PM Fasal Bima, Kharif crop insurance is done at a premium of only 2 per cent. And this premium is paid by the government which benefits the farmers. Till now lakhs of farmers have got the benefit of this scheme being run for the farmers and lakhs of rupees have also been given as compensation.
How much insurance does the farmer have to pay?
As per the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, farmers have to pay a premium of 2 per cent for Kharif crops, 1.5 per cent for Rabi crops and up to 5 per cent for cash crops.
Under this scheme, crop damage is reported within 72 hours. Under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, 18 insurance companies, 170,000 bank branches and 44,000 common service centers are serving 27 states and union territories.
Damage caused by El Nino is also covered in insurance
The Meteorological Department has also issued an El Nino warning. Due to this, change in weather and crop failure is possible. In recent months, farmers have faced bad weather. In such a situation, the farmers who have got their crops insured under this scheme of PM, they can easily get compensation for the loss.
